Small Homes, Big Fun: Bluewater and Aaron K. Holmes at the 2026 Poquoson Seafood Festival

Our smallest houses came with a feature you will not find in most homes: permission to draw on the walls.

Bluewater Building Company and Aaron K. Holmes partnered on sponsorship and the playhouse village and activity zone at the 2026 Poquoson Seafood Festival. Together, we created a welcoming place for younger children to play, use their imaginations and enjoy a little festival fun of their own.

Held October 16–18, the 44th annual festival celebrated Poquoson’s coastal heritage and the working watermen of the Chesapeake Bay. For our team, it was also a chance to spend time with the neighbors who make this corner of Hampton Roads feel like home.

From wooden frames to a little neighborhood

Before the chalk came out, our crew got to work. The setup photos show the village taking shape, from unfinished wooden frames to small houses with doorways, roofs and details that made each one feel welcoming.

A doormat, flowers by the entrance and a toy kitchen inside added to the fun. The scale was small, but the purpose was familiar: build a space people want to spend time in. This time, our visitors just happened to be a little shorter.

James described the idea simply: give younger children somewhere to enjoy themselves, including those who were not ready for the rides, while their parents caught a breather nearby.

Three ways to make the space their own

Chalkboard creativity

Chalkboard-painted surfaces turned the playhouses into part of the activity. Children could write their names, draw pictures and leave their own mark. On these houses, a little chalk on the walls was exactly the point.

Small-scale games gave younger festivalgoers a place to play.

Games at their size

Building blocks, mini cornhole boards and basketball games added more ways to play. The activity zone gave younger festivalgoers choices, whether they wanted to build something, try a shot or explore a little house.

A free place to pause

Our playhouse village and activity zone did not require a ticket. Families could stop by between other festival activities, with space for the kids to play and parents to take a short break nearby.

Bluewater + Aaron K. Holmes: a shared local effort

Bluewater Building Company and Aaron K. Holmes worked together on the sponsorship and activity zone. We were proud to be part of a local partnership that brought a welcoming stop for families to this community tradition.

We caught up with current customers, met neighbors considering future projects and enjoyed conversations about life here on the Virginia Peninsula. Aaron brought local real estate knowledge to the conversation, while our team talked about building and home improvement.

Some visitors had a specific question. Others simply stopped to say hello. That mix of familiar faces and new connections was one of the best parts of the weekend. And yes, there was plenty of seafood along the way.

Thank you, Poquoson

Thank you to the families who visited, the festival organizers and volunteers, and everyone who made time for a conversation. A special thank-you to Aaron K. Holmes for partnering with us on the sponsorship and activity zone.

As a builder serving Hampton Roads, we spend plenty of time thinking about how spaces work for the people who use them. This project brought that idea to a community celebration: a few little houses, some simple games and room for imagination.

We loved being part of the 2026 Poquoson Seafood Festival and are already looking forward to next year. If your family stopped by, we would love to know: which activity was your little one’s favorite?
